MG TD TF 1500 - Windscreen hardware

Does anyone have the correct nut/bolt size for the windscreen hardware that holds the screen in position. This is the area where the "D" washers, acorn nuts, and winged nuts tighten everything up. I got new hardware from Moss and nothing seens to fit the existing screws/studs. Not only that, but I can't seem to get any nuts to fit on the studs.

Mark - Those are a real esoteric thread. They are a British Standard Brass or British Standard Cycle. I retapped mine (back before I knew what I was doing) so I don't know what the original size is. E-mail me at: SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and lets see if we can come up with the proper threads on those things and I'll put them on my web site. Cheers - Dave

Have the brackets/studs been rechromed recently? I have used some repro wingnuts, etc. in the past that fit well.

Chris Coupers' "original TD midget" page says 5/16", British Standard Brass, 26tpi.

I just got through polishing mine up and I held them by screwing them onto a BSF-5/16 bolt.

I replaced two of the studs with new ones from Moss (Europe) using a 5/16 x 26 BSB tap to repair the threads. A mixture of new and old dome and wing nuts fitted the new and old studs. BSB taps and dies are available from tracytools.com

I checked the threads with a thread gage and they are, in fact, 26 tpi by 5/16". The new Moss parts are correct with the same tpi and diameter. My problem is that the treads were dirty and the new wing nuts did not want to go on the stud. I cleaned up one of the studs and it went on with not too much trouble. The other stud had been worked over by a PO with what appears a standard BSF thread and didn't fit on all the way. He had just put washers in place to take up the slack. I guess that I could try to finish the threading on the stud and tap the new wing nut so that it would fit. Hopefully it will stay tight enough. I could put some thread lock on the threads to secure them or just use a lock washer.
