MG TD TF 1500 - Wing Mirrors / Placement
Fixing some paint chips on the TF's wings! I am at a good point to fill in the holes and put the wing mirrors where you could actually use them! The PO had installed them so you could not see the turn indacators (one of which is "haunted"...and comes on at will). So here's the question....were these a aftermarket item only? If they had been "factory installed" ...what is correct placement? The obvious answer is to have someone sit in the car and mount them where they might render a view of something other than the sky or ground and still leave a view of turn indacators so I don't look like I should be driving in a Lincoln in Flordia (70 miles down the freeway in the left lane with right turn signal on!)I belive my turn indacators are in correct place (dead top center of wing right in the middle of tire as I have seen in old mags showing new factory release photos). Any input before I drill new holes? Cheers, David #A1 55 TF1500 |

David Drilling holes into the wings......brave fellow! My TF had mirrors mounted on both wings when I bought it in 98. Doubt the were factory installed, I believe one of the cars 4 previous owners put them on. To be frank when I first got the car the placement was of no importance as the buggers vibrated so much a clear view of what was in the mirror was impossible. Whilst dismantling the car last summer for a repaint noticed that several catch nuts and bolts were missing from the radiator shroud...had them replaced and the wings are now shimmy free and wonder of wonder the mirrors can be of use.Not sure of the absolute correct position but will send digital photos of mine for reference. If the placement seems good to you drop me a line and I will measure some distances. good luck Jeff |

The mirrors were an option, although I only partially certain that they were dealer installed. The correct placement id on the highest point on the fender Side to side), and should be directly over the front wheel center (fore and aft). Regards, Lew Palmer |

From what I am getting back so far from other owners it seems these were, at least so far, a dealer option. It also appears there were 3 places they got installed. With some differences of how well they work. 1 To the "inside" of the direction signals. (where mime were) Totally worthless near impossible to adjust and block view of direction signals. 2 Directly "behind" the direction signals. Drivers side functional ...passengers side somewhat blocked by interior mirror Directional signals visible. 3 To the "outside" of the direction signals. So far owners with wing mirrors mounted here seem to be happiest with the results. Just from sitting in the car and having someone hold the mirror here this seems to work the best. Cheers, David |

David A1, Mine are directly behind the indicators and indeed the right one is obscured (at least for my heigth). Outboard is no doubt best but is not as neat (in some opinions). Patch holes and drill holes.??? For a guy who will not punch a hole in the dash for and aftermarlet gadget this is going to be painfull. As for factory installed. I had a 55 in early 56 that was a Euro-delivery to an army post and it had two mirrors, these were mounted outboard of the indicators and were quite usefull. Of course I was a foot taller then. Mirrors were indeed an option and not really a necessarily dealer option, although I am sure all gave them. Mirrors were just and accessorry available from a number of manufactuers. Lucas being one of them. Installation location was up to the installer. Most people find that outboard of the parking/turn lights is best but has it's own problems. It is very easy for passerbyers to knock into these. Best case they knock them out of a alignment and you have to constantly readjust. Worse case, as happend to me, is that they get really torgued and you get a dent at the mirror mounting or a big hunk of painted chipped off. |
