MG TD TF 1500 - Wire gauge question
The adventure continues....... OK, I'm finally getting around to replacing the ignition switch and I find that the P.D.O. has a wire that looks like 10 or 12 gauge (stranded) stuffed under the screws on the old switch. Does anyone have advice as to the correct AWG needed for the headlights and ignition? I can't seem to find the info in any of the books that I have. Second question, I have a small rust through under the paint on the drivers door near the bottom. If I take this to a body shop, they will probobly fill it with body putty and let it go at that. Is this good enough? Is there a better way? I suspect that there is wood behind that section. Thanks, Tom |

As far as the rust goes. Unfortunately rust is like tooth decay. You can cover it up but it is still there and will keep eating away. Also what caused it in the first place? That needs to be taken care of. Many times water went down between the interior and the door and collected at the bottom of the panel. There should be two weep holes under there to let moisture out. To fix it properly you will most likely need to pull the wood frame out, have the rust removed, add any metal back on and then replace the frame. Better seal the inside good while you're at it as well as preserve the wood. Also make sure the weep holes are functional. This should only be done by a professional that deals with wood body coachwork. Chris |
