MG TD TF 1500 - Wire Harness Clamp Question

Two of these clamps were on my fog light wire. The harness was removed over 35 years ago and I don't remember where they were mounted.
Thanks Mike

Mike Hart (52 TD 16378)

fI thik they slide over the lower lip of the frame extension between the crossmember and the bumper, with the wire fitting in the bump-out.
George Butz

mike, the two wire clamps on my fog light wiring were the type that insert into holes in sheet metal crossmember, not the type that slide onto the edge of sheet metal. so i am of no help here..my car has an assembly date of MAR51. regards, tom

Mike, in the Service Parts list, it shows "clip- harness to front extension- near-side", qty 2. seems to correlate with what I thought. Also excuse my bad typing- the "ergonometrically correct" keyboard at the house is awful (plus I can't proofread either!)George

Thanks George, but I'm not sure what the front extension is. Curved bumper bracket or the apron?

Mike that is the piece that runs from the crossmember (the piece that the engine mount/shocks/lower inner A arm pivot attach to) out to the bumper mount bolts. The car chassis number is stamped on the left one. See item #2 in the ASL catalog. George

PS- the clips in question keep the fog lamp wire secured as they travel from the main harness over the crossmember as they go foreward and up to the lamps. George

Got it, thanks George.

Can someone provide me a picture of an unmolested original harness showing these two clips and the fog lamp wire?
Chris Couper

Here's one that I took while disassembling 'the53'. It may not meet your criteria Chris, but I'm sure that was original. And, it shows Mike's clips. Bud

Bud Krueger

Bud: Thanks. I had the clips correct (spread out more) but I was trying to determine how the wire looked still in tact. I thought it was looped back on itself but the clips only have room for a single wire.

I looked at Dave's sight but his was a bit molested too but it looked similar to yours.
Chris Couper

Here's the intact wire and clips on my 53 before I removed them. It looks similar to Bud's.

OK. We now have three pictures that show the same thing. So I understand the clamp part.

What concerns me is the tail or end of the wire. I can't believe it was the factories intent that we drive around with a 6" or 8" wire flapping in the breeze underneath the car.

In the workshop manual there is a drawing that alludes to a clip at the lower right steering bolt to hold the loose end but I cannot find any evidence of that on any car and it does not look like there is enough length remaining to get back that far anyway.
Chris Couper

Can you buy this clip?
Frank Cronin

Send the top picture to AS at

abingdonspares@myfairpoint.net

and ask them. They have a lot of clips not shown in their catalog.
Chris Couper

We are getting closer. Here is how I think it should be laid out but I cannot tell from this photo how the end is attached nor how it is doubled back on itself.

Chris Couper

This is how I THINK it might have been but will await more evidence. Its easy to change since all you have to do is slip the clips off, feed the wire and slip them back on again.

Note the front clip holds the wire that is closest to the loom and the back clip holds the wire nearest the end. Later if a fog lamp is installed you just pull the clips off and use them as required, if at all.

Optionally you tuck the end of the wire into the strap that holds the cross loom bundle across the steering rack (not shown in this image). I am waiting on some new straps to do that.

Note to Self: Clean dust and touch up chips on dumb irons.

Chris Couper

Oh and for safety's sake shouldn't there be a female bullet connector on the end of this?
Chris Couper

OK. I was wrong. It is more like Buds and Joes. Rod Brayshaw sent me this picture of a TD he disassembled.

It does look like there was some rubber cap or something on the end of the lamp wire though. Its not just the male bullet connector.

Chris Couper

Chris, there was a female bullet sleeve on the end of the line. Bud
