MG TD TF 1500 - Wire type hose clamp sets
Do your self a favor when you receive a wire type hose clamp set for the TF, or if you have an unopened set waiting to be put on the car, check the sizes! I received a set of 8 clamps and there were supposed to be three sizes in it, but there were only two. A mistake was made in packaging, it happens, no big deal! The two small clamps for the hose coming off the lower thermostat housing were wrong and too large. I called Moss and they are sending me the right clamps at no charge. I like the Moss people, their very knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help when ever they can. Plus I get my stuff in two days, if it's coming from Virginia. (Grin). PJ |

PJ, Just a note re the clip type on TFs,in addition to the 8 wire clips(water hoses)the Rocker Cover Breather Pipe to Vokes Air Cleaner has 4 "Jubilee" clips for affixng. You can still get these clips stamped "Jubilee". The prototype TF had wire clips on this area of the car, however I suspect the Factory changed to the Jubilee type clip when oil leaks started to run down the side of the Rocker Cover! Rob, where can I get the Jubilee clips? Thanks, John |

Jubilee hose clamps are available from www.vintagemgparts.com in the UK....I've always found the wire type clamps to be useless and very corosion prone...Terry |

Originality on ‘em wire clamps: Two months ago I was penalised at a Concourse show for not having the correct bolts on the Moss supplied wire clamps. According to the judges the hexagonal bolt heads are wrong and they should be domed/round heads with a groove for a flat screw driver.

Terry, Vintage MG Parts does not list the Jubilee clamps! Only Nesthill and Enots. PJ |

Found them! Seems like their sold by Marine dealers in the UK. No information about these modern Stainless Steel types being used on older British cars. |

I wonder what the thread count is on the Moss wire clamp screws? PJ |

John M, The "Jubilee" clips in mild steel, zinc plated, are available from L Robinson and Co Ltd.,Kent,United Kingdom.Cadmium plated clips in this size are not available. Punch in www.jubileeclips.co.uk and their contact details will be evident. The size you need is 'O',16-22mm,(0.630-0.866"),with a width band of 13mm. I actually purchased mine(in a box of 10)through a hardware store contact here in Perth who had to get them in from a wholesaler.A protracted process but worth the effort! They came from L Robinson. Hope this info helps. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

John, Are you referring to the "Aerospace" clips? Their the only ones I can find that has the size you recommend. Do they have "Jubilee" stamped on them? PJ |
P.S. Jennings |
Thanks Rob, the information is appreciated. Paul, it seems you are on top of this search, if you track them down and have to buy a box of 10, I would be happy to go in with you. Thanks, John |

PJ, When you enter the L Robinson site, click on 'Standard'for the clips, mild steel, zinc plated. Yes,these clips have "Jubilee" stamped on them as per original. They are manufactured in the UK.Rare thing these days! A nice touch for TFs. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Well, the clamps in question are available, but evidently Robinson only sells in volume. The smallest order that I see could be placed is 100 clamps! That's 10 clamps each in 10 different sizes. Oh well, nice thought initially. PJ |

Are the TF and TD clamps the same. Jim |

Jim, From what I'm reading, the wire clips were placed on all the coolant hoses but the Jubilee clips were only placed on the TF breather hoses. That's only speculation on my part, as I've never heard of this before. PJ |

Hi PSJ, Original period photos back up Rob's view on the breather hoses using Jubilee clips. As with many things, production variations no doubt occured - the Jubilee is a better clip, but was probably more costly than the wire type! Cheers John |

Ok, Here's the supposedly right clip. A Jubilee 16-22, Zinc plated, Cadmium is no longer available. Fairly expensive by the time they reach our shores, exchange rate, vat, shipping etc. Some distributors won't ship outside the UK. I'm working on a solution. I have found no dealers in the US or Canada for the Jubilee clips, only the UK. Here's the clip. PJ |

And here are some originals. Cheers, Matthew. |

Hi All, Detailed support for the Jubilee Clips on the Breather Pipe include the following references and experiences: .Photograghic evidence is included in articles published in The MG TF Road and Track 1954,MG TF Road Test Road and Track 1954,The MG TF 1500 Road Test Road and Track Dec 1954,Tuning the MG Sports Car Illustrated 1955. .Also,in the TF Ilustrated List Of Service Parts(issued by The MG Car Company Limited (1954),Plate F,Engine Cylinder Block Components,Etc.clearly depicts the four(4) Jubilee clips for the Breather Pipe. .We have had two(2) very original TFs in Western Australia which I carefully perused before they were ultimately restored, and therewere the "Jubilee" clips in place. An mgtf associate in New Zealand has also observed these clips in this area of the car on very original, untouched cars. .The confusion has often arisen in the past on this issue because of individuals observing the 'wire type clips'in a photogragh published in early 1953 via The Autocar,MG TF midget. If you look closely at this shot of the engine bay you will see prototype only items such as a heat shield for the carbs,an additional 'upper piece' on the Battery Retaining Bar,and of course the erroneous wire clips! Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Hi Matthew, Interesting photo of Jubillee clips - I wonder why one has lost it's plating and gone brown. I know it's closer to the heat source, but only by a couple of inches! Also original 'round hole' air filter mesh clearly seen. Rob, impressive back up info. especially your reference to a single misleading photo. Single examples have misled restorers on many issues of 'originality' over the years! Cheers John |

Looking at the clips Matthew shows, I can see why it would be beneficial to find originals. That would be a chore in its self! The new ones have the combo screw/bolt head. I like the originals much better. PJ |
