MG TD TF 1500 - Wire Wheels

I have inherited wire wheels and want to check to see if they are running true. I jacked up the car so I can rotate the tires freely. I set my dial indicator horizontally and recorded the wobble in the wheel.

Does anyone know what is an acceptable spec on this dimension?

I get about a .040" variance on the two front wheels.

Can I leave it alone or is this a bad reading?
Mort 1950 TD Möbius

Hi Mort:
I just copied an old article out of a MG Magazine. It was for a full restoration of the old 48 spoke wheels by taking them COMPLETELY apart and rebuilding from Scratch. I plan on doing 6 this winter in Tucson then powdercoating them.
The chap doing the article identified that the experts of the time used a maximum of .030 (30thou) in runout for both axis.

Mort,
I wouldn't think .040 lateral movement would be very noticeable.

What would really bother me is vertical eccentricity.

A little of one or the other is one thing, but a combination of the two may require a closer look.

Also, I would be willing to bet that radials would be more tolerant of variation than bias ply tires.

Jim Northrup

I've checked the rear and get about a .060" on both sides. i did find a loose axle nut on the right rear and fixed it. That could account for the shimmy at 70-73 mph. I am going to have the wheels balanced and road test it again before deciding whether to true the wheels now or wait for winter.

Jim, Where did you get that nice sketch of my car??? ;)

Jasper,
It's a nice sketch but the image must be reversed.
The steering wheel is on the wrong side!
;)

Steve,
Not only is Möbius missing the wire wheels but the sketch of me is missing the grease on my pants.
Other than that it's perfect.

Mort,

The car has always been in Holland. The 1st owner ordered the car ex Abington as a RHD. Why he wanted a RHD I don't know. The only reason I can think of is that the guy was a bit excentric: both an abbot of a sister's monastery of the roman catholic church and an artist. Imagine, and that in combination with such a car! Always dressed in black (therefore also a black car I suppose). In 1956 he sold the car to his best friend (also an artist) and bought an Austin Healey.
But it's no problem to drive a RHD, on the contrary, it's even more fun. Fortunately the position of the pedals is identical ;-)
