MG TD TF 1500 - Wish Me Luck

Well, the time has come to see if the TD will run. I scheduled a "see if it runs/identify the leaks" get together on Saturday. I thought this would be the best way to get me enthused enough to finish sanding, priming, sanding, priming, painting the tub and get things moving along. I bought the car in pieces, and was able to determine the engine had been rebuilt but never run, and the gearbox rebuilt as well. Now, hopefully, we can get it to run!! Now the real question - consume the OSH to celebrate or console?
don scott

Don -- I wish you all the luck in the world. It is a great day when you first hear the little 4 banger start banging. I will never forget the first time I lit off a "T" series engine after a rebuild. It was in 1958. Since then I've done two more. They are just about to get awakened from a long winters nap.
Cheers,

It will be a celaebration I am sure!

"celebrate or console"...
Doesn't matter as long as you "consume"!
Don't forget to do the "Mowag shuffle tradictional pre-start dance" to honor the Gawds of Abingdon before pulling the starter!
I'm hoping for "celebrate"!
Best of luck to you!

Take it way outside away from any buildings, watch out for escaping Lucas smoke, keep a fire extinguisher handy, make sure you have oil pressure, etc. Keep the beers cold for the celebration!
George Butz

Dave S - thanks for the advice. I was going to "kill" a few OSH as a pre-start sacrafice, so maybe that will help with the dance!
don scott

Most importantly...MAKE SURE YOU HAVE OIL PRESSURE BEFORE YOU START THE ENGINE!!!

If you manage to start it without pressure, and it doesn't build up pressure within a minute or so after it's running (and it probably won't), you WILL wipe your bearings!!!

Do a search in the Archives using PRIME as the search word...you'll find a number of threads that will tell you how to do it.

Don,
invite your friends and have them all around when you pull the starter. And have someone around with a camera to shoot a Youtube so your BBS friends can join virtually on such memorable moment. Wish you lots of excitement and fun. And of course all of us know that it will run fine but we are not going to tell you this now because that would kill your excitement.
Greetings, Huib

Let me know if you need some.
Have a good supply!
Cheers

I got all excited for a minute Dave cause I thought you were talking about OSH.

I had to substitute Fat Tire.

Making me all goose pimply thinking about when the day comes that I'll be able to start a thread like this.

Good luck getting her started. We're all waiting for the video of it.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I have laid in a supply of Bass Ale and Newcastle Brown Ale in addition to the OSH, just in case the Gods need a little extra appeasement! I will try to capture on video and post on YouTube.

Update: SUCCESS!! The hardest part was getting the oil pump primed as I have an early pump without the priming port. Once that was solved, and we corrected the loose oil filter, we moved on to static timing the dizzy and charging the fuel pump. Surprisingly, there was only a small leak from the front banjo fitting which careful tightening was able to correct. Then, the big moment.....and it fired right up and actually ran pretty smooth, considering the carbs were just approximated and the timing was unchecked. I have posted a video on YouTube: HearTeddyRun if you want to hear the sweetest sound I have heard today.

The pic below was my starting set up, for anyone interested. Thanks to everyone on this board for your help, since I didn't have the benefit of taking the car apart (actually, now that I think of it, that was a benefit) I have found this board to be most helpful. Now, onto the tub!

And here is the post starting homage to the Gods.
