MG TD TF 1500 - XPEG TF 1500 Timining

I have been trawling the archives and am left confused I am afraid.

I want to check and set the timing to optimise it. It is not a long way off but she runs hot on motorways and I think she has more to give.

I am using unleaded fuel ( hardened valve seats), pertronix, plugs set to .30, high out put coil.

My head would have been skimmed a small amount just to level it. Compression is good and even across all cylinders.

The static timing recommendation to account for modern fuels range from 5 degrees BFTDC to 10 degrees - to 13 degrees ( someone picked up from John Twist)

The dynamic timing on attached chart would indicate 25 degrees a 3,000 RPM but I have seen recommendations from 30 degrees at 3,100 RPM to 35 degrees. I am guessing the higher recommendations come from a higher start point ie 5-10 degrees before TDC to account for modern fuel ?

Much of the discussion is around TDs and I am assuming mostly 1250cc cars so I am now lost as to what is right for my car since the compression ratio will be different

I know there is no 'right answer' but a target to aim for before final tuning with test drives would save a lot of heart ache.

I have a variable timing light is the good news :-)

Thanks

Dave

Standard cam?

usual test is advance until it pinks on acceleration in top under load, then retard until it stops.
mog

standard cam. I have courage but not a lot of experience so the 'feel and smell' approach doesn't work well for me. You should have seen how long it took me to set up the carbs :-(
