MG TD TF 1500 - XPEG977 Almost Finished!!

Don't want let LaVerne's new hot rod engine get all of the attention …

XPEG977 for TF7211 is almost finished. I haven't seen it since June 2018. George and I are painting it tomorrow (12-Jan-2020.) Hope to carry it from Clearwater to Orlando next Sunday and install. Maybe start it, too. Woo Hoo.

Here is a photo journal by builders George and Nick Pardee. Some neat details noted. They also drive #66 TF in vintage races. More photos will be added.

Quite can't put my finger on it but something there looks familiar.

Incredible photo journal. Looks like you're on your way! Nice feeling isn't it?

Congrats Lonnie

Had a great day with George and Nick. We painted my engine and talked MGs all day and into the night. Our plan is to install and start next Saturday. Can’t wait to hear that fire-breathing beast roar to life!

Lonnie,

I looked through your journel and think its very valuable with excellent detail. There are so many issues documented and solutions mentioned.

I am going to use it when I go through my TF engine which I hope to get started on late this year.

Thanks to you and Nick!

Resprayed the gearbox, painted the tappet cover and assorted small external engine parts today.

Tomorrow: Clean the garage, stow tools, search boxes to find parts and fasteners to install engine on Saturday. Gettin' closer!

Hey. What attention to detail. The Purolator decal is set at just the right angle. :-)
Christopher Couper

The original decal was long gone. It’s at the same angle as the ghost of the original decal that could still be seen on the canister.

Looks great Lonnie. I notice the lifters.... Sweet! Which paint did you decide to use?

Installation and startup delayed from this Saturday to Sunday. Gives me a little more time to get ready.

Frank - I used Bill Hirsch Engine Enamel - MG Maroon. The current batch number is 30571: Bought Jan 2019 and again in Jan 2020. The color is more purple than the quart of batch #29332 that I bought in June 2014. Not necessarily bad, just different. The oil filter canister is Moss #220-550 Austin Healey Light Green Engine Paint.

We painted the engine with a brush because there was no place to spray. I painted the gearbox, tappet cover, and small parts which are at my house with an airbrush for tight area that might run (1-paint / 1-acetone), then with a Harbor Freight detail gun (2-paint / 1-acetone).

The Bill Hirsch paint goes on nice with either spray or brush. Try using a foam brush for smooth surfaces like the tappet cover. I used one to touch up mine and can't tell the difference with a spray on job or with the foam brush.

I used a small greenhouse to do some of my small parts painting. Whatever works to get the job done!!

Marital problems.

The marriage ceremony of XPEG977 and TF7211 was beautiful. But on the wedding using wedding cars tonbridge night, soon after consummation, 977 squealed and refused to move. The couple are seeking counseling and 977 will undergo intense therapy in hopes of making the marriage work.

Translation: Something went wrong. Installation of my XPEG engine went well yesterday. It started but froze a few seconds afterward. I believe that I heard a squeal as it froze. Not good. Tear down, inspection, and repair soon. I'll keep you posted.

Maybe too long a bellhousing bolt hitting the flywheel? They make a really bad noise...Really odd, as I'm sure all rotated nicely during assembly. George

We removed my engine yesterday. George took it to his shop in Clearwater to investigate and fix. Pray that it's easy and inexpensive! I still have a long way to go on the wood and the panels, so this won't cause a major delay in the restoration.
