Triumph TR6 - 2nd gear
Hi Folks, So I took the Spit out for a quick drive (listening to "Top Down" CD. The 6 is now ready to have major metal rebuild (just have to find a good welder), finding a welder is a challenge. So a question relating to the Spit? I cant engage 2nd gear it graunches! during the rebuild I have replaced the clutch, master and slave cylinders.....So come on guys answers please Les |

Les If you are having no problems with the other gears then probably a circlip that retains the second gear synchromesh cluster in the tranny has failed. You will have to remove and do the transmission. The same happened on my 68 spitfire transmission 20-25 years back or so. You may be able to do it in situ by taking the transmission top cover off but I think it easier to work on out of the car. If all gears are affected then I would suspect the thrust washers in the engine. Check crankshaft for end float. This also happened to my Spitfire but I was unable to shift into any gears with the clutch pedal fully depressed. Really - a drive in NL at the end of May? (tongue in cheek) |

Mike As usual many thanks for the swift reply, I will have to dig out the repair manual for the drawing of the gearbox...just when I'm getting ready to sell it. Yes it was a top down drive, we know live by the coast on Bonavista Bay, it was a great day for it yesterday. Wet and cold today...brr Les |

IIRC that second gear clip slips out occasionally. Might be in the bottom of the gear case |

Hi Don llRC? I guess the gearbox will have to come out? Les |

If I Remember Correctly Pull the gear case plug and see if anything is on the magnet |

I do seem to recall the clip was in the bottom of the transmission but I think I got a new one any way. |

Problem solved.....the Spit sold "as is where is" the new owner opted to drive the car HOME....6 hours away...did I mention that I had only driven this a total of 20 miles to shake it down after putting it back together! Email from the new owner....can ran sweet/great even over the potholes....My next thread will be on the 6 rebuild, booked to go into the bodyshop in 5 weeks...new floors, sills, rear valances and a bit more...mmm time to cut a new CD "Pheonix - 6" or "New Heavy Metal", could do with help on idea tracks. Thanks to all...Oh I am trying a JURA Superstition tonight Les |
