Triumph TR6 - Grinding noises from transmission
I drove my 73 TR6(no overdrive) on a 30 mile round trip on Saturday. The trans has ground gears slightly going into 3rd & 4th since I've had it. I know the sychros need to be replanced. However, I now hear grinding noises after the car is already in gear and I'm cruising. It did it when I was accelerating in 1st and also cruising at a normal speed in 2nd, 3rd & 4th. It was the sound of metal parts spinning at high speed grinding together. It would do this intermittantly and stop when I pushed the clutch in and took it out of gear. I don't know if it's the flywheel hitting something or if it's the clutch. It was extremely loud. The car is said to have clutch work done prior to my owning it. Can you take a couple of guesses what it could be to put me on the right track? I've never had a car do that after it was already in gear. It didn't seem to be popping out of gear slightly when the grinding happend. Thanks for your help. |

Sounds like a layshaft bearing, does it make any noises when sitting in neutral idling. Keith |

No. It didn't make any sound just idling. |

Don, Mine makes noises in 1,2,3 but not 4 recently had a solid LBC mechanic do a diagnosis and he thought it was the layshaft bearing, based on the fact that we could get it to make noise or not, and the presence of gray metal flakes in the oil. (brass for synchros I think). Have you drained the oil yet? Sounds like work ahead for you as well as for me I hope to be done by April 15th. Regards, Keith |

Well, it looks like the me and the transmission are about to become good friends. I haven't drained the oil yet. I'll do that this weekend and start figuring out what parts I need. |
