Triumph TR6 - Live axle
Gents I have what many would probably consider a silly question but I have no idea of what the difference between a live axle and a fixed axle is. Are there advantages to either? My auto expertise pretty much stops at the gearbox. |

A live axle is when the diff, half shafts and hubs are all contained in one large [heavy] casting, usually suspended from cart springs [ie TR3 & MGB] and more rarely on coils on LBCs anyway. Don't know what a fixed axle is unless it's an American expression for the same thing. Ron |

I would guess they're the same thing. |

Solid and live axles refer to the front and rear suspensions respectively. Solid axles date back to the Model T and the I-beam and tube versions are still used today on hot rods. Otherwise, the solid axle is a dinosaur having been replaced by wishbone and strut setups. Rick O. |
